Pre-Trip Training & Orientation Days

These day long sessions are included in price and conducted at our premises in Dorset. Held in a relaxed and informal environment they are designed to introduce all riders to the adventure they are about to embark upon, and are a perfect opportunity for everyone to meet each other. The emphasis is on ensuring that everyone is happy with how the trip will work on a daily basis and how we aim to ensure that everyone makes it safely to Dakar. Most importantly it is a chance to answer any final questions you may have before we set off. A summary of topics covered is below:

  • Meet the Kudu team and each other
  • Equipment & route familiarisation
  • GPS training
  • Ride out and navigation practical
  • Puncture repair demonstration
  • Motorcycle maintenance

GPS & Navigation Training

For those of you not familiar with GPS (Global Positioning System) Technology, it is used extensively by us to plan and run our expeditions. A GPS is a hand-held device which you can mount onto your motorcycle handlebarsand it will enable you to very easily navigate to any given destination en-route. That could be to meet up with the support crew for lunch, a key petrol station in the vastness of the Sahara, or your hotel accommodation at the end of the day in Dakar. You will be given practical instruction on how to use the system during our pre-expedition training session, and also during the expedition itself.

GPS systems are available as an optional extra - please see the Prices and Booking page for details. If you are going to provide your own GPS then we highly recommend the Garmin GPSMap 62CSx. In addition you will need a handlebar mount and power cable. See our Resources page for some suppliers.

Off-Road Training

All off-road training is done en-route and takes the form of a gradual increase in difficulty level of each trail that we ride in order to build confidence and experience. Much however is dependent upon the weather and if there has been a lot of rain in particular then our trails can become much tougher. It is a very good idea therefore to prepare yourself as much as you can before hand, in particular if you are a complete off-road beginner. We recommend novices attend at least 1 training session before the trip.

For those resident in the UK the Yamaha Off-Road Experience in Wales offer excellent tuition in a friendly environment. You can experience a full day's riding on smaller enduro bikes under the expert eye of their experienced team - call them on +44(0)1686 413324 to book your place.
