The potential dangers associated with this type of travel should not be underestimated, and at Kudu Expeditions we will always be open and honest about them.  Recognising these dangers, however, is your greatest defence against them.  That is where our unique pre-expedition training comes in.  It should leave you confident that you know how to keep yourself, and your fellow adventurers safe on the road.

The Dangers

Potholes, mud, sand, animals and other road users are just some of the things you must learn to contend with safely on a daily basis.   Whether you are crossing the Sahara, the Congo or the mountains of Pakistan one thing will be consistent - our goal is to get from A to B with all expedition members safe and well.   For this reason we take a very pro-active approach to safety and we will do everything we can help you benefit from our experience.

A summary of how we approach safety is as follows:

Bike safety
  • Pre-departure training for both on and off road work.
  • Detailed briefings and rider notes on each day's travel covering all predicted safety aspects.
  • The use of professionally qualified mechanics to maintain your motorcycle and keep it safe to ride.
  • The use of professional medics on our bigger trips.

The pre-expedition training will be held over two weekends for the bigger trips, and one day for the Paris-Dakar Challenges in the run up to the departure date, and is included in the price.  It is intended that all expedition members will attend, which will give people a chance to get to know one another in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.

A summary of the topics to be covered is as follows:

Bike training
  • Awareness of the hazards associated with riding and driving in developing countries
  • Techniques for safe riding and driving in rural and urban areas
  • Safe off-road techniques
  • Equipment familiarisation
  • Basic bike and 4x4 maintenance and repair

We will try and remain as flexible as possible to the needs of expedition members and where extra training is deemed necessary, we will endeavour to provide.  Specific dates for training will be given nearer to departure days.
